Stop Scams

By understanding the tactics of scammers, you can protect yourself and your family from becoming victums.

Scam Warning Signs

If you see some of the below warning signs, it is possible that you are talking to a scammer, and you should move on to the Scam Detection section.

  • An unsolicited (unexpected) phone call.
  • A free offer, refund, or discount (if its too good to be true, it is).
  • An aggressive/mean agent. If you think that the company that the agent is claiming to represent (Apple, Microsoft, etc.) would not approve of the behavior of the agent, it is probably a scam.
  • Payment via anything but a Credit Card (Bitcoin, Gift Cards, etc.). Ligitimate companies NEVER accept payment via Gift Cards over the phone.
  • An agent trying to get you to log onto your bank. Ligitimate companies don't need access to your bank to transfer money to/from your account.

In summary, use common sence. Large companies wouldn't want rude agents answering support calls, and the US government wouldn't outsource call centers to other countries. Most of the time, if you step back, you can find one of many holes in the scammer's logic, and if you can't reason with him or her, hang up. It is much safer to hang up, restart your computer, and if the problem does not go away, call the company who made the computer directly, not a random phone number that pops up.

If the scammer threatens you, hang up and find the official number of the company or agency that called you. Talk to the appropriate person about the call you recieved and make sure that nothing bad has happened. You can also tell the scammer "I don't know if this call is a scam, so I am going to call you back at the number I found on your company's website.", ligitimate companies don't have a problem with this, and will usually help you out by giving a name and extention number for when you call back. Scammers, on the other hand, will typically do everything in their power to keep you from hanging up.

Types of Scams

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum
